Why Are My Plant Leaves Turning Yellow?
Yellow leaves are a warning sign, not a diagnosis. Before adding fertilizer or spraying, use the location and pattern of yellowing—plus the soil, roots, light, and recent care—to narrow down the cause.

The short answer
University of Maryland Extension notes that environmental problems are often mistaken for pests or disease. Too much or too little water, unsuitable light, and poor growing media can all cause yellowing. One yellow old leaf may be normal; rapid yellowing across the plant is a stronger signal that something changed.
What the yellowing pattern can tell you

These patterns narrow the possibilities, but species, season, soil, and recent weather can change their meaning.
Five causes to check before you treat
1. Water and drainage
Do not diagnose from the surface alone. Push a finger, wooden skewer, or moisture probe several inches into the root zone. A pot can be dry on top and saturated below. Check that water exits freely and that the container is not sitting in runoff.
- If dry: water the full root ball slowly until excess drains, then allow the species-appropriate amount of drying.
- If wet: stop watering on a calendar. Improve drainage and airflow; inspect roots if yellowing or wilt continues.
- If moisture swings: water more evenly and consider whether the container is too small or the soil has become water-repellent.
2. Root stress
Roots need both water and oxygen. Compacted soil, blocked drainage, planting too deeply, recent transplanting, heat around a container, and root rot can all reduce uptake and produce similar yellow leaves. Healthy roots are generally firm; soft, dark, foul-smelling roots point to decay.
3. Light and temperature
Low light can slow water use and leave soil wet longer. Sudden intense sun can bleach foliage, while frost, heat waves, drafts, and hot windows can cause rapid stress. Compare the timing of symptoms with recent moves and weather.
4. Nutrients and soil pH
A nutrient symptom does not always mean the nutrient is absent. Incorrect pH, damaged roots, saturated soil, or excess fertilizer salts can make nutrients unavailable. Maryland Extension describes older-leaf yellowing as a possible nitrogen pattern and yellow new leaves with green veins as a possible iron-chlorosis pattern. Soil or tissue testing is more reliable than guessing.
5. Pests or disease
Look under leaves and along stems with good light. Webbing, stippling, sticky honeydew, cottony material, scale-like bumps, holes, halos, or spreading lesions provide more useful clues than yellow color alone. Remove badly affected fallen material and sanitize tools between plants when an infectious problem is possible.

A five-minute diagnostic checklist
- Locate the first yellow leaves: old growth, new growth, one branch, one side, or the entire plant.
- Check moisture below the surface: note whether soil is dry, evenly moist, or saturated.
- Inspect drainage and roots: look for blocked holes, standing water, circling roots, softness, discoloration, or odor.
- Inspect leaves and stems: use a hand lens if possible; look for insects, webbing, residue, lesions, and distortion.
- Review recent changes: watering, fertilizer, repotting, heat, cold, heavy rain, moving the plant, herbicide, or construction near roots.
Take one full-plant photo and close photos of the upper and lower leaf surfaces. Record what you find before making a treatment change; that makes it easier to judge whether the next step helped.
When yellow leaves are normal—and when to act
Often normal: a small number of oldest leaves yellow and drop while the plant continues healthy new growth; deciduous plants change color seasonally; recently moved plants shed a few older leaves while adapting.
Common questions about yellow leaves
Should I cut yellow leaves off?
Fully yellow leaves will not turn green again. Remove them with clean tools if they detach easily or show possible disease, but do not strip many partly green leaves from a stressed plant at once.
Can a yellow leaf turn green again?
Usually not once most chlorophyll is gone. Correct care can protect remaining foliage and help future leaves emerge healthy. Mild, early interveinal chlorosis may improve after the underlying pH, root, or nutrient problem is corrected.
Does yellow mean too much water or too little?
Either is possible. That is why the moisture and root check comes before treatment. Wilt plus wet soil is especially important: roots may be short of oxygen or damaged even though water is present.
Should I use Epsom salt?
Not unless a test or plant-specific diagnosis supports magnesium deficiency. Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur; it does not correct overwatering, nitrogen shortage, iron unavailability, pests, or disease.
